Siobahn Day Grady Launches First AI Research Institute at an HBCU
Siobahn Day Grady, an associate professor at North Carolina Central University, launched the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Research (IAIER) in January 2025, marking the first AI research institute at a historically Black college or university. The institute aims to help students and faculty develop AI literacy, addressing the uneven distribution of AI education resources across higher education.
Why it matters: This initiative addresses the critical gap in AI education and research funding at HBCUs, which receive less than 1% of federal R&D funding despite representing 3% of four-year institutions.
